Fashion News, Kolkata designer opens first store in Mumbai with Rani Mukerji in attendance. On display was his brand new women’s ready-to-wear collection, a bridal trousseau, fine jewellery, menswear and footwear.

When Kolkata-based designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee opened his flagship store in Mumbai at Kalaghoda on Wednesday, the first person to step in was his long-time muse — Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji.

The Bong beauty was taken on a tour by Sabya and oohed and aahed over the hand-painted Istanbul lamps and chandeliers, vintage plates, photographs of royal families and old clocks. “Not just Sabya’s clothes, his interiors too define exquisite old world luxury,” said Rani, adding she was the designer’s “deewani”.

Sabya himself revealed that this is a new direction in the way designers do up their stores now.

On display was his brand new women’s ready-to-wear collection, a bridal trousseau, fine jewellery, menswear and footwear.

“Any woman can own a Sabyasachi saree for just Rs 3,500,” he said, through his no-profit ‘Save a Saree’ initiative for the weavers of Murshidabad.

This initiative is strongly supported by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vidya Balan for whom Sabya designed clothes in Raavan and Paa respectively.

He’s also designed for Rani in No One Killed Jessica. “The look he’s given me is far removed from his signature touch,” she said.

I also found it kind of fitting that his Mumbai store is in the Kala ghoda, the art district.

The store’s décor is inspired by Parisian romance. Mukherjee explains as he walks us through the shop, “The reason the whole world celebrates Paris is because the Parisians celebrate themselves. The best way we could achieve the kind of vintage romance that Paris is known for, was by using pieces from our own history. Which is why I was very particular about each piece that went up here – I’ve sourced photographs and prints from all over the place.”

Sort of inspires me to write short stories about a crime fighting duo of a turban wearing handsome detective and his pretty saree clad apprentice, where inexplicably they find that everyday, the saree and the turban designs are somewhat coordinated… Hmmm..

It is a poor take off on some stories that I read a long time ago where the dress of the secretary and the tie of the detective was matched.. Bella Roy or something? Anybody remember them?

Does give me an idea of creating some coordinated set of saree, chunri and turban.. I think it will be visually pleasing… Key word here is coordinated, not “matched”. I am NOT going to take two sarees, embellish one of them, take the second saree and make a chunri out of it and from the left over fabric make a turban… no, I am not going to do that…

Fashion Style, Did you see Katy Perry on the Thursday night? The Kids’ Choice Awards it was and there were just one after another shocking things happening all around the night. Let’s not talk about anything else but about Katy Perry getting slimed. Well, all those mischievous acts took place all of a sudden when Katy was about to unravel the name of the winner of the Favorite Movie category.

She just opened a box for finding the name of the winner and right then a heap of green slime got splashed on her and she went all green and all wet. You must have seen how she was looking and how she reacted to it. Funny and very amazing it was.

And then comes the real attraction of the night when she was seen wearing the very gorgeous peacock colored dress which is simply adorable and simply very pretty. The sequined work of the dress, its pearls and studs and the beautiful strapless cut are adding just another dimension of good look and style to this dress.

I was really surprised to understand that Queens of Wonderland, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter were completely overshadowed by the real life royalty. You would never guess who were present on the ceremony – Camilla Duchess of Cornwall and Vivienne Westwood. Both were wearing pompous and awkward dresses.

Avril Lavigne looked much better in her long black dress and a dazzling diamond necklace.

To tell the truth, most of the dresses, if not all, can be named only awkward just like the book itself.

The film actually was premiered (February 25) in London and I am ready to bet it would become a hit. As to me both kids and adults will watch it with pleasure.
