Devon Aoki cute pose

Written on May 21st, 2009 by shamsino shouts

Fashion Style, Devon Aoki, a Lagerfeld muse-turned-actress (her new project, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead, is in post-production), looked every inch the leading lady in Alberta Ferretti and Chopard jewels at the Spring Fever premiere in Cannes last night. Makeup colors and soft pastels, like lilac, were big news for Spring and Resort. What do you think of lavender—does it work better for fragrances or fashion?

Yes Love Is All Around

Written on May 19th, 2009 by shamsino shouts

Fashion Style, Walking into the Mulberry shop on Madison Avenue last night, you could be forgiven for wondering how Valentine’s Day had come around so soon. The store was decked out in pink and red balloons, “Baby Love” was playing over the loudspeakers, and everywhere you looked, there were people kissing. In photographs, anyway: Mulberry was celebrating the release of Chris Craymer’s Romance, a book of photographs of couples in love that the brand has published itself in a limited edition and is selling in its stores. Shots from Craymer’s series were up for silent auction and hanging on the wall (where they’ll remain until July 7); Mulberry designer Emma Hill, for her part, was having a hard time deciding which picture she wanted to bid on. “There are so many good ones,” she complained. “All these beautiful moments, very unselfconscious, very English…” The collaboration between Craymer and Mulberry was, she went on to note, “a marriage made in heaven.”

Sloan Barnett’s interest in the Lying-In Hospital at New York

Written on May 19th, 2009 by shamsino shouts

Fashion Style, Sloan Barnett’s interest in the Lying-In Hospital at New York Presbyterian is truly personal—she gave birth to two of her children there. But the intimate story she had to share with the guests at a benefit luncheon hosted by Akris and Bergdorf Goodman today (which raised $450,000 for the institution) had to do with a more recent drama. In town for just 36 hours, Barnett showed up at Cipriani only to be told by her mother that her brassiere was totally exposed in back. When Akris CEO Caroline Brown (clad in a chic winter-white suit identical to the one that Angelina Jolie wore to a premiere of Benjamin Button) got wind of the wardrobe malfunction, she took Barnett backstage and swapped lingerie with her.

Rihanna’s Style

Written on May 15th, 2009 by shamsino shouts

Fashion Style, It was the usual editor, model, and fellow designer crowd at Derek Lam’s store opening party last night. That is, until Rihanna popped in wearing her first-ever Lam outfit, look 22 from his Spring collection. Something tells us that her white suit will be one of the first items to sell out at the gleaming new Crosby Street boutique.

Binetti in Fashion Show

Written on May 15th, 2009 by shamsino shouts

Fashion Style, It seems unbelievable, but it’s time for another round of shows. Resort arrived in my office this week via Diego Binetti, who sent me a sneak peek at his lookbook, which was shot on location at Billy’s Bakery in Chelsea. The Argentina-born designer has really hit the sweet spot with his I Love Binetti line. Launched last September, it’s been picked up by Anthropologie and Macy’s. “I wanted women to be able to buy it like lipstick,” says the designer, alluding to the much-discussed lipstick index, which posits that when the economy sinks, cosmetics sales rise. “It’s designed to be indulged, with a good price point and fantastic details.” I, for one, am tempted to cheat on my diet.

Kate Moss’ 18-carat turban-crowning Harry Winston

Written on May 8th, 2009 by shamsino shouts

Fashion Style, With Kate Moss’ 18-carat turban-crowning Harry Winston sapphire seered into memory, and Solange Azagury-Partridge’s store opening party on the schedule for tonight, we’ve got jewelry—big jewelry—on the brain. So there’s no better time to introduce you to the work of Albino D’Amato. When the Milan ready-to-wear designer set about creating jewels for his Fall show, he was thinking big, too. The new collection—made of brass, bronze, silver, and Swarovski crystals and called “Faunesque”—takes its inspiration from mythology, grotesqueries, and the animal world. Carp, owls, and monkeys caper on outsize rings, necklaces, and bracelets.
